The first thing to note is that these brands have all been designed by black women to make them look more black.
And that’s because black women are still underrepresented in beauty marketing.
According to a recent report by Black Beauty, a nonprofit organization, there are more than 500 makeup brands designed and manufactured by women of color.
According the report, only 8.3% of the beauty products sold in the U.S. are marketed by women who are of color (in other words, those women aren’t making money on the product).
To make matters worse, a third of the U,S.
beauty brands don’t have black-owned brands, meaning the brands are more likely to be made by men who own makeup companies.
(The report also found that there are currently only two black-run beauty brands on the market.)
That makes it hard to make money off of the products you buy, and makes it harder for black women and women of colour to achieve their own beauty ideals.
According, Dr. Jillian Raskin, a makeup artist and director at the nonprofit Black Beauty told Salon: “We’re a product of whiteness and we’re not allowed to be ourselves.
And it’s incredibly hard to see ourselves reflected in products that aren’t made for us.
I feel like we’re living in a world where you’re not making anything that is meant for us.”
While these brands are designed to be more flattering than any other makeup, the makeup they use is actually made with black face pigments.
This makes the products look like they’ve been sprayed with makeup remover, according to Dr. Raskins research.
Dr. Keshia Johnson, a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Davis, who researches black beauty, told Salon that she’s seen a shift in black beauty products over the past few years.
“In the past, you could see a lot of the things that were done in the past in black-dominated spaces—like the eye shadows and the face contouring—being a thing that’s not possible for black beauty brands to replicate,” she said.
“Now it’s possible.
Black beauty is now being able to do those things, and I think it’s really good for us as artists to be able to create and sell those kinds of products.”
Dr. Johnson added that the more diverse makeup looks in beauty stores, the more people are willing to buy them.
“People are willing, in a certain way, to pay for that,” she explained.
“There are black women that I think have seen the value of the black beauty aesthetic and want to get into it, so I think that the products that are being made are going to be better for them, too.”
